Hello !

Contre toute attente, mes petits montages de 2 Polikarpov ces derniers temps m'ont pour l'instant donné goût de nouveau au maquettisme même si mon "humeur" reste très "changeante" ... bref ! Donc je reviens un peu plus sur ce forum et je vais prendre le temps ces prochains jours de le parcourir un peu !

Je me lance dans un grand classique, le "Huey" (UH) de la guerre du Vietnam ! 1ère fois que je monte un hélico et je n'y connais rien donc de l'indulgence svp !!

Le kit :

Le Bell UH-1 Iroquois, surnommé « Huey » (pour HU, "Helicopter Utility"), est un hélicoptère de manœuvre et d'assaut américain, dont le prototype effectua son premier vol le 22 octobre 1956. Plus de 16 000 exemplaires civils et militaires furent produits et exportés vers plus de 70 pays ; il a été développé en de très nombreuses versions. Possédant un fuselage semi-monocoque en alliage léger, toutes les variantes du Huey (à l'exception du UH-1Y) ont deux rotors bipales. Le rotor principal, semi-rigide, est surmonté de deux barres stabilisatrices disposées à angle droit par rapport aux pales. Deux petites surfaces de profondeur, actionnées hydrauliquement, sont fixées sur la poutre de queue. C'est le Corps des Marines qui reçut des Bell UH-1Y Venom modernisés et améliorés (recevant entre-autres quatre pales au lieu de deux). L'armée de terre américaine retira du service ses 7 derniers exemplaires le 2 février 2011 tandis que l'USAF en conserva jusqu'en 2017. Un certain nombre de versions volent encore en 2024 ici ou là ...

Le UH-1D (Bell 205) est une version à fuselage allongé et avec un moteur plus puissant (1100 ch) que les précédentes, conçue pour le transport de 14 soldats ou 6 brancards. Le prototype vola pour la première fois le 16 août 1961 et fut accepté par l'US Army le 31 mai 1963. Les livraisons commencèrent le 9 août 1963.

Le Huey est indissociable de la guerre du Vietnam qui vit pour la première fois l'hélicoptère prendre une place prépondérante dans le déroulement des opérations militaires. Le Huey, de par la variété des rôles qui lui furent confiés et son omniprésence, devint pratiquement un symbole de ce conflit. Les UH-1 de l'United States Army Aviation Branch ont effectué 9 713 762 heures de vol entre octobre 1966 et 1973 en 3 configurations : "Slick" (transport de troupes ou cargo), "Gunship" (appui au sol ou escorte ; le Huey Cobra AH-1G devait remplacer les gunships Huey, mais Bell ne put en produire suffisamment) et enfin "Medevac" (évacuation sanitaire). Pendant la guerre, 3 305 UH-1 de tous types furent détruits par accidents ou du fait de l'ennemi. La première victoire aérienne d'un Huey survint le 12 janvier 1968 lorsque l'équipage d'un UH-1D d'Air America réussit à abattre deux Antonov An-2 de la Force aérienne populaire vietnamienne au Laos.

Autre image emblématique, l'évacuation en catastrophe de Saïgon de plus de 7000 personnes les 29 et 30 avril 1975 par des Hueys alors que la 324e division nord-vietnamienne était en train d'entrer dans la ville.

Démarrage classique avec le pit (pas trop le choix en fait !) et notamment le plancher qui vaut le coup d'être travaillé à mon avis...

La base :

Un plancher passé à l'alu, puis une couche de chipping puis un "Light gull grey" (de ma composition avec des AK).

Puis le travail commence : réapparition de l'alu par plaques avec le chipping, jus, huiles, pigments etc, etc.

Pour les bancs en toile, les pièces du kit sont moches (beaucoup trop épaisses) ... ça doit valoir le coup de les scratcher entièrement, à réfléchir encore ! Pour l'instant, je me contente de les couvrir avec du papier mouchoir légèrement plissé avec de la colle blanche. Je verrai bien après peinture si c'est crédible ...

Un Huey, mon hélicoptère préféré (Il a un charme fou avec comme fond sonore Paint it Black des Stones !), monté par un historien et associé à un excellent maquettiste me font sortir de ma torpeur usuelle pour admirer ce futur magnifique montage.

Je me rappelle avoir monté le kit Esci quand j'étais jeune, ça date (comme on disait en Egypte à l'époque).

Autre souvenir de jeunesse : j'allais en vacances en Italie près de Lac de Garde à la fin des années 70 et l'armée italienne avait encore de Huey dans ses effectifs.
Le bruit de l'engin est très caractéristique, principalement en basses fréquences, et il s'entend par temps calme à des km à la ronde. On entendait arriver les Huey bien avant de les voir. C'est pour ça que quand je vois des films de guerre dans lesquels des fantassins sont surpris par un Huey, j'en déduis qu'il s'agit d'une unités de sourds demon7

... mais ça ne me plait pas ! Trop serré (peut-être une erreur de conception de Dragon), trop lourd ! Je sais bien que l'UH-1D était une version allongée du 1C pour le transport rapide de troupes (14 sièges + 2 pilotes, 12 fantassins débarqués à chaque rotation) mais en même temps, ça alourdissait considérablement la libellule et ne permettait plus l'embarquement de matériel (ou l'évacuation rapide) etc. L'avantage du Huey était clairement sa polyvalence et les variantes de configuration étaient nombreuses (sans même parler des versions médicalisées).

Souvent on voit cette config, juste avec une banquette (6 sièges + 2 sur les côtés avec les mitrailleurs) :

Je ne suis pas spécialiste du Huey, mais à mon avis, tu as totalement raison !

La deuxième banquette est plutôt une gène qu'autre chose, ça fait plutôt version transport longue distance que support rapide aux opérations. On voit sur plein de photos qu'elle était démonté pour faciliter les mouvements à bord.

Et sinon historiquement parlant et pour les premières fois (on l'oublie trop souvent) ce sont les Français en Algérie qui ont établie les premières règles des combats avec hélicoptères. Transport de troupes et assaut.

A propos de la coque de blindage, un copain sur un autre forum (Philippe, aka "iceman" ... je ne sais plus s'il est encore sur Fighters) m'a indiqué qu'il y avait en fait 2 versions : celle avec le blindage tel que proposé par le kit et une autre sans blindage qui, d'après lui, était la version le plus souvent montée au Vietnam "car les pilotes avaient le sentiment d'être "engoncés" dans leurs sièges et il ne pouvaient pas voir comme ils voulaient dans la zone de vision trois quarts arrières".

J'avoue que j'hésite du coup ! Mes propres recherches sur des films et photos du Vietnam ont tendance à me suggérer que le blindage semble très souvent en place ...
